How to Measure a Room with an Android Phone

There are several ways to measure a room with your Android phone:

Google Measure App (For older Android)

If you have Android 7.0-9.0, you may have the built-in Measure app:

  1. Open the Measure app (if available)

  2. Point your camera at the floor and move slowly to detect the space

  3. Tap points to measure between them

  4. Measure wall-to-wall for room dimensions

Note: Google discontinued this app for newer Android versions, but alternative apps work even better.

Best Alternative Apps

1. RoomScan (Most Popular)

  • Uses your phone's sensors to create floor plans

  • Touch phone to each wall in sequence

  • Generates scaled floor plans automatically

  • Available on Google Play

2. Magicplan (Best for Professionals)

  • Creates detailed floor plans by scanning with your camera

  • Add furniture, doors, windows

  • Export to PDF, CAD, or image files

  • Popular with event/venue professionals

  • Free basic version, paid pro features

3. AR Plan 3D (Uses AR Technology)

  • Measures rooms using augmented reality

  • Creates 3D floor plans

  • Measure distances, perimeters, heights

  • Works with most Android devices

4. Moasure (Most Accurate)

  • Uses motion sensing technology

  • Just move your phone from point A to point B

  • Very accurate for longer distances

  • Great for outdoor spaces too

Which Android Phones Work Best:

  • Phones with ToF (Time of Flight) or depth sensors - More accurate (Samsung Galaxy S20+, Note 10+, newer models)

  • Any Android 7.0+ - Can use AR-based measurement apps

  • Google Pixel phones - Have good AR capabilities

Tips for Accuracy:

  • Use good lighting

  • Move slowly and steadily

  • Calibrate the app if prompted

  • For critical measurements, verify with a tape measure

Magicplan is probably the best choice for professional floor plans, while AR Plan 3D works well for quick room measurements during site visits.
